Martti Virtanen 101158-122Y, elective knee operation, 2. post operative day at the university hospital.

The operated knee is swollen and painful. Full weight-bearing is allowed. Physiotherapists conduct an initial examination and then begin advising the patient to get out of bed and walk using walking sticks.

The patient is lying in bed when the physiotherapists arrive. They inform him that it’s time to get up and walk to have some coffee. While assisting the patient, the physiotherapists engage in casual conversation about their weekend plans, largely ignoring the patient. After approximately seven minutes of walking practice, the patient falls. He is unresponsive and not breathing.

The patient is on the floor, lying on his left side.
