Ethical coffee room 2: Case patient with Mpox

Mpox is a rare infectious disease which caused an outbreak in Europe during 2022.  Ben is 45 years old male and has been diagnosed with mpox and admitted to an infectious diseases ward in the early days of the outbreak. The isolation routines are very strict, and the room has special ventilation aiming to stop the virus to spread by the air. The ventilation makes the room quite chilly, and Ben complains to the staff that he is freezing. One of the staff members explains the reason but Ben does not accept that, he wants the staff member to change the ventilation to a normal mode. They discuss for a while and the discussion results in that the staff member changes the ventilation mode.

  • What do you think about how the staff handled the situation?
  • How would you have done, and which ethical concept would you use to argue for your actions?
