Ethical coffee room 3: Case multiprofessional collaboration
In a hospital, a physiotherapist often works as part of a multidisciplinary team, which includes at least doctors and nurses. Collaboration should proceed seamlessly, always in the best interest of the patient. You are a physiotherapist at a hospital ward. You repeatedly notice a nurse’s behavior that you consider unethical towards the patients. When this nurse is on duty, they use bedpans for patients who can go to toilet when assisted. Patients are sometimes kept in bed or unnecessarily restrained in chairs throughout the day, which, in your opinion, hinders their physical recovery. When you bring up the issue with the nurse, they attribute it to being busy and state that rehabilitation measures fall under the responsibility of the physiotherapist.
